Brewington, M. V.
M. V. Brewington (1902–1974) was a native of the Eastern Shore of Maryland, as were his forebears who settled there in 1669. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, he followed his family footsteps into the banking business, but during collegiate summers, he shipped out to sea. His lifelong interest in the sea and seafaring became his career and hobby.
His expertise in maritime history led to wartime and postwar appointments as a librarian and cataloguer of historical records for the U.S. Navy. Brewington’s outstanding career in maritime history includes becoming the maritime curator of the Maryland Historical Society, assistant director and curator of Maritime History at the Peabody Museum of Salem, and trustee or overseer of several other maritime institutions, including the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels.
