Fisher, Richard E.
Richard E. Fisher was born in New York City, the only child of a high school teacher father and a piano teacher mother. He achieved his BA in creative writing from Wesleyan University in 1955 and an MA from the University of New Hampshire in 1960. Fisher left his doctoral studies at the University of Rochester in the fall of 1960 to become the first Fulbright Lecturer in American Literature and Cultural Studies at Lund University in Sweden. Upon his return to the United States in 1963, he taught at the University of Maine and later at the State University College, Oneonta, before returning to Lund in 1969. He stayed there until his retirement in 1996.
He lives with his wife, a retired linguist, in Sweden, but often visits the United States. He is the author of Out of the Fog: The Sinking of Andrea Doria, which was originally written in Swedish.
