George, William E.

William E. George is a graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy. He also received a master's degree in ocean engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology. He is a member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers and the Propeller Club of the United States.

He is the senior surveyor for National Cargo Bureau, located at Seattle, Washington. Previously, he worked for the National Cargo Bureau in New York and was an assistant professor of nautical science at the United States Merchant Marine Academy, where he taught naval architecture, ship construction, celestial navigation, and specialized cargo handling systems.

He holds a United States Coast Guard license as Chief Mate of Steam and Motor Vessels of Any Gross Tons Upon Oceans, with additional endorsement as Master of Freight and Towing Vessels. In 1972 and 1981 he sailed aboard various types of United States-flag merchant ships, including oceanographic, general cargo, container, crude oil tanker, multiproduct refined petroleum tanker, LPG tanker, and multiproduct chemical tanker.

He is the editor of Stability and Trim for the Ship’s Officer, Fourth Edition, and the author of an IMO information paper on the maximum GM for log ships and three U.S. Coast Guard–approved courses on stability for fishermen, damage stability, and self-study in ship's stability.
