GNU has a great many wonderful and useful libraries so I will keep on using cygwin or even get another box going on Unix. See 'config.log' for more details. I really don't know where your problem is.

You could find more what happens if you would evaluate the various log files which take the output of the attempts to compile.
The configure script uses AC_PROG_CC, which tries to compile and link an executable, to determine that EXEEXT should be .exe; linking fails, because you don't yet have the necessary runtime libraries.
